Numeracy

Our aim at Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda is to enable our pupils to be numeric to the level required for them to excel within the school and beyond. As a school that promotes numeracy we pay particular attention to those pupils who do not receive support from the Special Educational Needs Department, but who, however, still need to develop these skills.

At Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda numeracy is promoted using the following methods:

Numeracy Testing

On entering Year Seven each pupil completes a Mathematics test. From the results of these tests and results from Key Stage 2 a target group is formed to aid numeracy skills.

The Numeracy Scheme

Pupils targeted to receive support are given the opportunity to participate in the numeracy scheme. One lesson every fortnight is timetabled to assist numeracy. Pupils follow "Ymlaen â ni" a level 3-4 catch up book in addition to the Spotlight programme of support. Pupils are also required to attend additional numeracy sessions with a mentor. Mentors work closely with the pupils, and facilitate their learning. Since its inception, the scheme has proved a great success achieving dramatic improvements in pupils' numeracy skills.

The Role of the Parent

At Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda we strongly believe that a contract between parents, the school and the pupil ensures the best possible education for our pupils. Numeracy is promoted in many ways.

Reading and writing and maths are probably the most important subjects for us all. In Wales, girls are doing much better than boys in these skills.

As parents and grandparents you can really help your children get on with numeracy. Here are some things you can do to help your child:

You and numeracy

• Let your child or grandchild know numeracy is important.
• When your child is with you, ask him or her to help you - for example by checking how much change should be given in a shop, checking what time to watch a programme on television or by playing a number game.
• Spend a short time (around 5 minutes each day) getting them to recite times tables to you.
• Talk about the number skills you have to do in your work and show your child examples of what you have to do.
