Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda

The Welsh Department

Welcome to the Welsh Department. We are a very busy department, with nine teachers currently working together to offer education and experiences to the pupils of Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda. As well as exciting and lively lessons, we aim to provide pupils with a variety of extra-curricular activities. Annually, we organise visits, trips, workshops, competitions and guest-speakers. Our pupils have enjoyed many successes, for example, teams of our pupils have been local public speaking champions for many years and for the last three years, our teams have been crowned national champions. As a department, we work tirelessly to promote the use of the Welsh language in the Rhondda Valleys, and to ensure that our pupils are offered opportunities to learn about their literary and historical heritage, and about Wales’ rich culture.

Key Stage 3

During Key Stage 3, skills already learnt during Key Stage 2 are developed and strengthened with further opportunities to enjoy experiences through the medium of Welsh. Our intention is to develop pupils’ communication skills, and assist them in becoming independent and responsible learners who are confident using Welsh naturally and as their first language; whilst speaking, writing and reading both literature and factual materials,

Key Stage 4

During Key Stage 4, W.J.E.C. first-language Welsh courses are studied by all pupils, with the majority of pupils studying Welsh first language and literature at G.C.S.E. level. The solid foundations set during Key Stage 3 are built upon, as we offer opportunities that allow pupils to develop as confident, Welsh- speaking young adults. Our aim is to offer opportunities that encourage pupils to become successful job applicants who possess the vital skills needed for the bilingual workplace.

Key Stage 5

Sixth Form pupils study Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level courses, offered by the W.J.E.C. Six exciting and varied modules are studied – from the traditional; Aneirin, Taliesin and Dafydd ap Gwilym, to the modern; scripting, creative writing and 21st century poets and authors. We offer opportunities to develop students’ linguistic skills and their creative and formal writing skills. It is a very well-respected and valued course amongst employers which requires candidates to develop a high level of accuracy in Welsh. We offer a wealth of opportunities and experiences to our students, for example, the successful and celebrated “poets’ day” that is organised annually by the department.
